STEPS for reducing a radon problem in your home recommended
by the EPA.
STEP #1: Take a short-term test. If your
result is 4 pCi/L or higher, take a follow-up test (step 2)
to be sure.
STEP #2: Follow up with either a long-term
test or a second short-term test. A long-term test will give
you a better understanding of your year-round average radon
level. If you need results quickly, take another short-term
test.
STEP #3: If you followed up with a long-term
test – fix your home if results above 4pCi/L or more.
If you followed up with another short-term test – the
higher short-term results, the more certain you can be that
you shoud fix your home. Consider fixing your home if the
average of your first and second test is 4 pCi/L or higher.

Two Basic Types of radon tests available to public:
Short Term Tests offer a quick and inexpensive
way to “screen” for radon in your home.
Short term tests do not measure the annual average of radon
levels. They are typically left in place for 2 to 7 days.
Test less than 48 hours are not valid.
Special measures must be taken during a short term test.
These conditions,” called “closed-house conditions”,
include:
1) All Doors & Windows must be closed:
2) Air exchange systems must be turned off (except furnace)
3) If the test is less than 4 days in length, the house must
be under closed-house conditions for 12 hours immediately
prior to testing
Decisions on whether or not to mitigate a home should NOT
be based on the results of one short-term test
Long Term Tests should be left in place
for a minimum of 90 days. Compared to short-term tests, long
term tests provide results that more accurately reflect the
average amount of radon in your home during the year. The
best way to estimate a year-round average is to test for a
full year. If a year long test can not be done, the test period
should include both heating and cooling seasons.
Where should you test?
Test the lowest level of the home that is regularly used.
For example, if you spend more than 8 to 10 hours a week in
the basement, MDH recommends testing the basement.
Radon test kits should be placed as follows:
1) Select a location where the test kit:
a) Will not be disturbed for the entire length of the test
b) Is at least 4 inches from other object
2) Place the test kit:
a) At least 20 inches off the floor
b) At least 12 inches from exterior walls
c) At least 3 feet from windows
3 DO NOT PLACE RADON TEST KITS:
A) Areas with high humidity, such as kitchens, bathrooms,
and laundry rooms
b) Direct sunlight
3) Areas of excessive heat
4) Draft caused by ventilation systems, fans, windows or doors
5) Crawl space, furnace room or other small enclosed area
